Princess Coronation Class 4-6-2 no 46233 Duchess of Sutherland passes through Burrs Country Park.

Princess Coronation Class 4-6-2 no 46233 Duchess of Sutherland passes through Burrs Country Park.

The East Lancashire Railway have often run photo charters through Burrs on Gala days before the start of passenger services. This was no exception. I was up at stupid o'clock and had to tip-toe out of my hotel in Rufford (I was visiting relatives up north) before setting off at 6.30 bound for Burrs.

The parcels and van train that 46233 was hauling was an almost exact replica of the one photographed in 1963 and published by Ivo Peters in his book "The Train now Departing".

This first shot was taken from the west side of the line and with the available light being minimal the firebox can be seen to have lit up the crew on the footplate.
