Birmingham New Street station is undergoing a complete rebuild. However it's still one of my least favorite stations. Down at track/platform level the ceiling height is quite low and above the tracks it's black. The lighting is also quite dim. It may be OK during the hours of darkness but during the day it's still like the black hole of Calcutta when moving from the daylight at the platform ends. The station operators also have a habit of changing platforms allocated to a train. This results in having to fight your way back up to the level above via stairs or escalators and then down again to the new platform. They then may change it again. Platforms are also quite narrow... I shan't go on any more but you get the picture....
