The signalbox on the far side of the bridge controlled the infamous Burscough curves.
In the next shot the points for the southern curve can be seen in place although they were removed soon afterwards. Campaigns to have the curves re-instated have continued for decades. They would enable services from Southport to Preston and Southport to Ormskirk.
