A Class 502 5car EMU arrives at Maghull from Ormskirk in 1964.

A Class 502 5car EMU arrives at Maghull from Ormskirk in 1964.

My brother and I were often at the station and got to know John, the booking clerk quite well.
This photo was taken from the steps of the footbridge.

Note the Gentlemen sign adjacent to the cab. It was one of those roofless pissoir's open to the heavens.

Only one of these Class 502 units has survived and is being restored inside a warehouse in Burscough. Whether it will ever be allowed to run on the electrified 3rd rail or not is very doubtful as the latest EMU's are designed to run on 750V DC whereas the Class 502's were designed to run at 650V DC.
