D1562 scrapped in 1971. Read on to find out why.

D1562 scrapped in 1971. Read on to find out why.

Early in 1971 D1562's power plant was experimentally uprated - with spectacular, and disastrous results. On the evening of March 13th, D1562 hauled the 19:30 Liverpool Street to Norwich in the hands of driver, Harry Hendry. Near Haughley Junction an explosion occurred in the engine room, followed by a fire. The force of the explosion blew the engine room door off its' hinges striking Harry Hendry; and breaking his arm.

After being stored at Ipswich until March 24th the seriously damaged machine was taken back to Crewe Works where the decision was made to scrap it, and final disposal took place in September 1971.

Thanks to Andy Parr, who had driven D1562 on an ECS working from Thornton Fields into Liverpool Street on the morning of the day of its' final run, for supplying much of the above information.

This was the fourth of the class to be scrapped, the last to be scrapped without being allocated a TOPS number (would probably have become 47446), and the first to be withdrawn for a reason other than sustaining irrepairable crash damage.
