The old signal box was located where the ugly grey box is now located.
For 6 years from 1965 until 1971 I worked as a newspaper delivery boy based at Mrs Fisher's newsagents shop which is the white building centre left. (now closed) There used to be a wooden hut between her shop and the railway signal box where the paper rounds were piled up. My final round covered Melling Lane, Willow Hey, Grange Park and then Foxhouse Lane, Daisy Mount, Spring Gardens, Station Road, Rutherford Road, Gatley Drive etc.... In those distant times everybody bought a newspaper. Carrying the weight has probably contributed to my back problems now!
At the top of the station slope on the far side was the original site of the booking office. It was a wooden shelter affair. It was then demolished and the booking office moved down the platform into an office in the waiting room area. Finally it has now crossed to be adjacent to the bus terminus and car park to the right of this shot. This was created in the old goods yard.
