Today, the City of London's 1297 Magna Carta will travel in a carriage as part of the Lord Mayor's Show to celebrate 800 years since the signing.

The City of London is the proud possessor of an original copy of the 1297 Magna Carta, the version which during the reign of Edward I was entered into the law of the land.

Chapter 13 of the 1215 Magna Carta declared "the City of London is to have all its ancient liberties and free customs both by land and by water."

The City of London therefore was entitled to elect its own mayor rather than have the Lord Mayor of the City of London appointed by the King (or Queen)
