The single track in the foreground is all that remains of the North Liverpool line from Aintree to Bootle.
For many years Grand National Race Specials would be routed via an elaborate series of tunnels and freight only lines from the main line near Edge Hill (outside Liverpool Lime Street station) to Aintree Sefton Arms station on the Preston, Ormskirk to Liverpool Exchange line. By this time only one track remained.
I believe a single track remains in situ but has not been used for several years.
