I read recently that the siding on the left would be used as a refuge by Liverpool bound commuter - stopping all stations -trains if the Scotch Express was running late - as it frequently did apparently. Thi siding was provided with a 3rd rail whereas the siding on the right was not.. I recall on an early visit that one of the ex L&Y or LMS commuter stock - pre Class 502 (we used to call them "Horse Boxes") was stabled or stored in this siding. It was just within stone chucking distance!
The area of the old goods yard up to the sub station is now a car park.
